Awkwardly Nothing

Joanne Makas and Flin Sharp

STACKS Projects

In this collaborative exhibition the artists explore how things we assume are of no value are deeply entrenched within our culture. Joanne and Flin will bring in the residual trash and stuff that they have made and accumulated in the studio over the last two years with the question “How do we move on?”

In our daily lives, we have the luxury of organizing, stashing, hiding and discarding our things. If archaeologists in the future were to dig up one of our landfills, what would it tell them about our lifestyles and values? Awkwardly Nothing explores how meanings and values are accumulated and transformed in the relationship between people and things. Thinking about art objects as human-assisted conduits through which information can flow, Joanne and Flin play with the idea that an art object exists as a precedent for thinking and conversation. They are interested in disassembling how popular culture contains and reflects the world we live in – everything from politics, to economics, pleasure to paranoia to uncomfortable humor.

I artfully combine strategy and aesthetics to create websites that leave an impression.

I’m not here to tell you why you need a website. I’m here to show you what’s possible.
