The Forest That Sighs

14 - 24 November 2021

Little Majestic, Marrickville, Sydney

The Forest That Sighs @ Little Majestic is a spiritual, emotional and physical response to our present ecosystem.  Inspired by how our ancestors had spiritual awareness and respect for Nature and other beings, recognising our connection and interdependence this installation explores the notion of deeply listening to our world. With a focus on opening us to the non-human world that we are part of, my aim is to explore where humans sit in relation to nature.Exploring the intersection between materiality and temporality.

The barely anthropomorphic forms appear as otherworldly, rising from the earth to enchant the unconscious to step forward. They possess a mystic vitality that whispers of the precious, precarious future. Handmade, organic, imperfect.

The Forest That Sighs evolved from an art residency I undertook in September 2018 at New England Regional Art Museum in Armidale (NERAM), NSW. The work was a response to the drive from Sydney to Armidale, along Thunderbolts Way, where I noticed the absence of green in the countryside. Care for country and place became a theme for me to explore while at NEARM. The land was dry and the absence of water in Black Gully Reserve, which is behind the museum, was a daily reminder of the environmental crisis in our country and globally.

Ritual, Sacred Space, and Mystical Experience emerged during the five day residency. Most importantly the works became a gesture towards care and protection of human spirit and land.

This work was developed from a residency with NEARM in 2019.

The Artemis Sound Bath

Invoking Artemis, the Greek Goddess of the Hunt, Forests and Hills, the moon and archery, this sound bath performance invites her healing powers to create space to pause from the chaos around you and find balance and transformation.

I invite you to close your eyes, listen and feel the vibrations, creating space for yourself — space to think and space to breathe.

Everything around us is vibrating. Sound is energy that vibrates through a medium and these vibrations are transmitted by a movement of molecules that ripples out in all directions. For this reason, you perceive sound not only with your ears and brain but also through your skin, so it is felt through every pore of the body.

The sounds introduced during The Artemis Sound Bath are an invitation to go into a deeper state of consciousness, are an opportunity to unplug from external stimuli, and invite therapeutic and restorative effects to the mind and body.

Through Sound, we can change the rhythms of our brain waves, heartbeat and respiration.

The Artemis Sound Bath performance asks to engage you in a multisensory experience with an overall intention to help you expand an awareness of the present moment and deepen your relationship to sound vibration.
